WHAT IS AN ENIGMA?
An enigma is like a mystery, it is something that baffles the audience's understanding and of which, cannot be explained... The audience will be shown something which they wont yet understand but will later on.

WHY ARE THEY USED?
They are used to entertain the auidence, an enigma will become clear later or at the end of a scene or film, the audience wont know what something is or why its there until later on.  An enigma intrests the audience because it influences them to carry on watching because it draws them in.

EXAMPLE!
This photo can be seen as an enigma because it doesnt explain why you have to keep out.
In a film if this were to be positioned in a scence or if there was a shot of it, the audience would want to know more, they want to discover the mystery themselves by understanding why there is a keep out sign.
